Dr. Barry Waldman M.D., FAAOS Johns Hopkins Medical School Sinai Hospital 410.377.8900

Rapid Recovery Program for Hip and Knee Replacement
Dr. Waldman has been a part of the Rapid Recovery Program for several years. He has found it very beneficial to the expedient recovery of his hip surgery patients in Baltimore, Maryland. Rapid recovery is a program developed by a number of experienced hip surgeons across the United States, including Adolph Lombardi, Roger Emerson, Keith Berend and Dr. Waldman in conjunction with Biomet. The goal is to restore joint function and patient activity level as quickly and safely as possible. It encompasses preoperative, postoperative and long term care of the patient and the affected hip or hips. The goal is to take every aspect of the surgery into account and optimize outcomes by standardizing what we know to be best practices. The program includes:
With the Rapid Recovery Program, patients can return to work after two weeks, and the recovery is much shorter. New materials and implant designs allow a surgical approach that has less effect on muscles and other tissues. This, coupled with specially designed physical therapy, advanced pain management and counseling, enables patients to recover more quickly and return to their preoperative level of functioning much sooner.
